Grifo

Grifo He's a pony and the mascot of the rescue center: his story is truly unique and special. In 2018, we completed a major seizure for animal abuse in Lunghezza, Rome: dozens of horses, ponies, donkeys, and mules. Among them were many pregnant females, and one of them, whom we later named Azzurra, gave birth to this little one, who, however, was born with a very serious eye problem: fungal and bacterial keratitis. Once mother and child were taken to the clinic, every possible treatment was attempted, but to no avail: the little one was blind. The veterinarians were even considering euthanasia when we decided to bring him and his mother to us. We had already cared for horses who had gone blind, but never one blind from birth. The first few weeks were difficult because we needed to figure out how to avoid danger without forcing him to a life of confinement. Then, little by little, it was Grifo who amazed us day after day: not only had he learned to navigate thanks to his mother, but he also established a bond with the other horses, especially with Nina. Over the years, he has developed his other senses so well that he is now able to navigate the paddock independently. Grifo has something special, which can only be perceived by knowing him up close.
