Balio arrived at the IHP Rescue Center in December 2014: he was a wonderful Christmas present for us, having just completed our first, very difficult move. Beautiful, powerful, and brand new (he had only been used for tests), Balio literally changed our lives. Thanks to his forks, moving bales of hay became a breeze, and his enormous wheels, combined with his great power, allowed us to move even through mud when necessary. You should know, however, that Balio has done much more: he has been invaluable on several occasions when we needed to lift some of our elderly horses off the ground who were unable to do so on their own—Petit and Evelina in particular. Once, the heroic Balio pulled Ethereal out of a hole where she had slipped due to the mud after a downpour, saving her life. In short, he is a formidable workmate and the horses' best friend here at the Rescue Center.
Its name comes from Greek mythology: Balius was one of Achilles' two horses , immortal and formidable (they also had the gift of speech). Find out who the other one is, named Xanthus .

Balio is a magnificent tractor that we could never have afforded, so we will always bless those who worked so hard to make this gift a reality. However, its maintenance is very expensive, and we'd like to share your experience by creating a team of special adopters, both for him and Xanto: with a minimum donation of €20, you can be their long-distance guardians for a year, allowing us to keep them in tip-top shape and working at their best. Of course, you'll be able to come and meet them in person, and unlike horses, you'll even be able to ride them!
